Make tests parallelizable to speed up automatic testing

The current test suites take a very long time, need to be run in the right place in the existing source tree, and expect full access to resources.

Hence they are not thread-safe and cannot be parallelized to make the test phase complete faster.

A suitable sandbox approach needs to be found and the tests adapted.
