Automatic registering to monitor of running applications desirable

Currently you have to do a bit of pretty cumbersome setup to get the monitor
running.
It would be nice if the applications automatically registered themselves for
monitoring. This would avoid the cumbersome setup.
There are some issues to consider when designing this feature. First it should
not be mandatory to deploy the monitor component. It is important we do not make
all components depend on the monitor. Second it contradicts the idea sketched
in bug 985 since the solution sketched here requires knowing which applications
ought to start.
